The Long-Haul Trucking Road to Profitability: Why Proactive Maintenance is Your Fleet’s Best Asset

Fleets can see greater success and improved profitability by focusing on getting ahead of vehicle maintenance. Besides driver compensation, asset maintenance and unexpected repairs are typically a significant expense to a trucking company. It’s no secret that a well-maintained, reliable truck is far more operationally effective than a vehicle plagued by frequent breakdowns. That reliability directly translates to improvements in operational efficiency, and is one of the most important aspects in running a solid, profitable business.
According to a recent panel discussion at a major industry convention, the cost of emergency roadside repairs continues to intensify, with parts lead times and labor rates up significantly over the last couple of months. With indicators that freight demand is slowly heating up, the pressure to keep wheels turning and delivery windows met will only continue to expand.
Trucking companies continue searching for ways to control maintenance costs and minimize downtime. More attention is being focused on previously under-utilized tools, including advanced telematics, predictive diagnostics, and structured driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs). The key is to position your organization as one that values proactive care over reactive firefighting.
Common characteristics of high-performing organizations include standards of excellence. Define the inspection behaviors that will lead to early detection, and define those shortcuts or ignored warning lights that won’t be tolerated.
Some of the top reasons we see small maintenance issues snowball into catastrophic fleet failures fall into the following categories (in no particular order):
  • Tires and Alignment - Uneven wear, improper inflation, and ignoring alignment schedules that destroy fuel mileage.
  • Brake Systems - Worn pads, air leaks, and out-of-adjustment components that compromise safety and trigger DOT violations.
  • Electrical and Sensors - Corrupted wiring, faulty alternators, and ignored dashboard alerts that leave trucks stranded.
  • Fluid and Filter Management - Delayed oil changes, low coolant levels, and clogged filters that cause premature engine failure.
  • Driver Reporting - Rushed pre-trip inspections and poor communication between the operator and the shop mechanics.
Talk to your company's highest-performing technicians and drivers to determine where your maintenance program excels, where your recurring blind spots are, and what will make the shop operations more productive, effective, and efficient. Getting shop feedback can help you identify areas of improvement. You will often find that investing in thorough preventative maintenance will pay off in the long run, and reduce your risk associated with catastrophic on-road failures.
